For distant shots without movement, 'Locked' can be selected to hold the camera view steady. With the latest Pixel phones, stabilization comes in four varieties. When beginning a video, the user can choose 'Standard' for normal or light movement. Google already had impressive video stabilization, but it has been improved further. This year, Google opted to go wide rather than long with the second lens. Zoom photography with a smartphone, while somewhat ludicrous, was all the rage and still gets great attention. In later generations, a second camera was added, but opting for telephoto. Each year, Google improved and refined the camera, keeping focused on a single rear camera and competing well, while other manufacturers moved to two or more rear shooters. It isn't that the camera or the lens is particularly impressive, but rather how Google is able to extract so much dynamic range, color accuracy and sharpness from relatively standard hardware.
